The origins of the roulette game are French as the word means little wheel. The game is played on a wheel with 37 sections, numbered 0 to 36, and a corresponding table lay out where you place your bets. The wheel is spun by a croupier who guides the game. As he or she turns the wheel a little white ball is spun in the opposite direction. When the little ball comes to a stop, it will land in one of the 37 segments on the wheel. Each segment is not only numbered, but is either red or black coloured as well, with exception of the zero which is green coloured. The objective of the game is to predict in which segment the little ball will land. There are different ways to place a wager, which will be discussed further on and these different ways include betting on colour- red or black-, odd or even number, a number range and an exact number.

A little bit of History

The classic version of the game is now called French roulette as it has been a popular game in France since the late 18thcentury and became a huge hit in the casinos of Paris about a century later. The game initially had a single zero and in 1843 the double zero was introduced to offer something different from other casinos. The double zero is now a typical trait of American roulette that gained popularity when the game crossed the Atlantic and became the staple table game in the casinos of Las Vegas. French style roulette reverted back to the single zero. In addition to Las Vegas in America, Monte Carlo was the only notable casino town in the Western world in the first half of the 20thcentury.

The Different Betting Options on French Roulette

There are different ways you can wager on roulette and each manner has a different win chance. You place your bet on the table layout that corresponds with the numbers on the wheel. You can place inside and outside bets. Inside bets have a smaller chance of winning but have a higher pay out if you do win then outside bets. As we mentioned before, roulette has French origins and therefore a lot of the game terminology is expressed in French.

You can place the following outside bets on roulette:

Number range; Low or Manque, 1- 18 or High or Passe, 16- 36.

Colour; Rouge or Noir, which means Red or Black.

Even or Odd Number; Pair or Impair.

Dozen bet; Première douzaine, P12 for short, first dozen from 1 to 12; Moyenne douzaine, M12 for short, second dozen from 13 to 24; Dernière douzaine or D12 for short, Last or Third dozen from 25 to 36.

Column bet; placed on a vertical column of 12 numbers, for example 1-4-7-10 etc. When making this bet you place your chip or chips on the space below the last number of the sequence of your choice on the table layout.

Snake bet; covers the numbers 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34 and is named after its snake-like pattern.

You place your bet on the lower corner of the number 34 square, which edges the 19-to- 36 box. This betting option is not available at all casinos. Some casinos where you can place this bet have an image of a snake with a head on either end on the layout table, where you can place your chips.

Outside bets have a higher chance of winning and consequently a lower pay out.

As mentioned before, inside bets have more challenging odds and for that reason higher pay-out. The following inside bets options are available on roulette:

Single bet; This is a bet placed on a single number and is also called a straight bet.

Split bet; placed on two adjacent numbers, this can be horizontally or vertically.

Street; placed on three consecutive numbers.

Corner bet; placed on four numbers that meet at one corner, also called square bet.

Double street; a bet placed on six consecutive numbers that form two horizontal lines, also called Six-line bet.

Trio; placed on three numbers including the zero.

First four; a bet placed on the numbers 0,1,2,3. This bet is exclusive to French roulette and not available on American roulette.

Other betting options exclusive to French roulette are Voisin de zero, which means neighbours of zero, Jeu de zero, meaning zero game and Orphelins which means orphans.

Online French Roulette

At most online casinos you can play different versions of French roulette, either in flash or with a live dealer if the online casino has a live games section. The difference in versions might have to do with the table lay out and/ or betting options. At the live online casino section you can choose to play at a certain table because you like a specific croupier. You can look at the table section and/ or search for ‘French roulette’ in the search bar to find the different roulette game versions available.
